Do it yourself guide on recovering data from your Surface Pro
Well… if you have backups, you are in the safe, and can just restore your backup onto a new device or at least access your files, This is the ideal situation. But like most of us, we don’t have backups or have very old ones.
Just like any other tech device, with a removable hard drive. The surface pro has a removable SSD hard drive. However to get the hard drive we have to remove the screen, which in most cases causes irreversible damage to the screen. But I am assuming the machine is dead, so damaging the screen is not a big drama.
Once the hard drive is reachable, you can remove it, install in a the appropriate caddy (USB enclosure) and connect it to a Windows PC and you can copy the data.
If the SSD is not encrypted you are good to recover. If the SSD is encrypted, a bit locker code was generated when the SSD encryption tick was ticked, and the key is required to unlock the drive and recover data.
When the encryption took place, an option to save the drive to multiple locations will be offered, (screen shot below)
Choose one of the option below: Recommended – Save to your Microsoft Account
Often users will save this to MS account (also strongly recommended), this will make recovering it much easier.
